Authentic and preserved Basque town, the ancient medieval city of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is listed in the “Most beautiful villages of France”.
An important step for pilgrims and walkers of the Camino de Compostela, it is indeed the departure of a long stretch of 24 km passing through the famous Col de Roncesvalles. Nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees on the banks of the Nive, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port retains its impressive medieval citadel, as well as fortified ramparts and gates.
In summer, take the small tourist train to discover in turn the traditional houses of the old town and the remarkable buildings such as the House Arcanzola, the house Mansart, as well as the prison of the bishops, a building classified with historical monuments Which is home to many exhibitions.
The Church of Our Lady of the end of the bridge, known as the assumption-of-the-Virgin church, is the most important Gothic building in the Basque Country. At the start of the campsite Sunêlia Berrua, less than an hour you will be required by car to reach Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. The shortest and fastest route is to reach Cambo-les-Bains by the D932, then to continue by the D918, passing through Itxassou, Louhossoa, Bidarray and Ossès.
