The essential markets of the Basque Country

The rich gastronomic and craft heritage of the Basque Country is best discovered between the stalls of local markets and local markets. All year round, traditional markets in coastal villages and land villages bring together local producers and craftsmen.

Among the most beautiful annual markets in the French Basque Country are those of Anglet, on the esplanade of Quintaou, those of Biarritz, at the halls, Place des Gascons or on the quays of the Nive, those of Biarritz, those of Bidart, Place de la Mairie, those of the spa town of Cambo-les-Bains, along rue Chiquito, those of Ciboure, opposite the town hall, or those of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, a true local institution.

The daily one of the covered halls of Saint-Jean-de-Luz is one of the most essential: you can find there in particular the line hake fished by the Luzian ligneous fishermen. In season, local markets generally extend well beyond the halls or the square where they are located all year round.

There are also more local handicraft stalls. From spring to autumn, and especially in summer, you will also enjoy night markets, farmers’ markets, craft markets and fairs in the villages of the coastal seaside resorts and in the typical Basque villages of Espelette, Ascain, Urrugne and Hasparren.
